Lately .. I have discovered a very interesting thing about myself.
I like every movie. Did I like Ghajini ? Yes . Did I like 'No Smoking' ? Yes. Did I like Chandni Chowk 2 China ? Yes . I mean I did not feel like leaving the theatre midway while watching any of the se movies. I don't claim that any of the movies were masterpieces , but I was entertained.
Mind you , its not that I don't appreciate 'good' cinema. I watch all kinda movies indies, arties , marathi, old English .
I sit on the first row to cheer Vivek Oberoi when he says ' Mai Marunga to tu Mar Jaayega ' in 'Dum' ( Btw I own this DVD :p) . And I don't forget my place on the last row as I quietly watch a masterpiece like 'Maqbool' in awe. Personally , I think Vishal Bharadwaj must be the most underrated individual in Bollywood . Anyways that subject warrants an entirely new post.
People expected a masterpiece from Ghajini . If you 'd seen the trailer and the well sequenced songs , you knew what to expect. Still people hated it coz it was too masala a flick coming from Aamir. Flawed expectations . Still its a super duper hit. Wonder how, since everyone I know who saw it , hated it.
While I was in India, I was amused by the reaction to Slumdog. Not that people hated it. But quite a few wondered what was the oscar fuss all about. A 'Traffic Signal' or a 'Salaam Bombay' ( haven't seen it yet) moved us. It showed the plight of the homeless kids in Mumbai . Thought provoking. Enough to make u donate to a NGO working the streets of Mumbai.
I did not feel anything like that with SM . Coz the movie is much bigger than that. . Poverty is the premise , not the subject of the movie. Its hope. Its your classic 'Rags to Riches'.
And everyone loves a R2R , right from the front bench to the back bench. And in this gloomy economy , just what the doctor ordered ....
